If the body lets me and the weather cooperates I may get in a short ride today. I rode only once in October so no doubt I've lost conditioning. We had 66 yesterday and they forecast that again today....if the fog ever lifts.

Well overall it is a nice place, but there are some not so nice places. Like the area where that double kidnapping/torture rape/murders occurred. That is definitely NOT a nice place. But like I said overall it is.

Re: My Most Recent Ride II

Saturday I rode from Paint Creek Campground to Hot Springs with the Greeneville Hiking Club group. There were six of us.

The first 7 miles we went from 1300ft to 3040ft according to the Triton 2000. We went 7 miles
up on fine gravel double track and down the backside on a logging trail which was mostly dirt, but dry.

We went on over to US 25 and when we hit that I saw 40 mph on the bike computer. That took us
    on into Hot Springs.

The "kids", 5 of them, had hamburgers and fries, and I had a cup of coffee. They are all nice people, not a nut in the crowd. Well, one, me.

Hot Springs back to Paint Creek is an easy 12 miles along the French Broad River and the last 5 miles on a paved narrow road up into the park.

The loop through the mountains is 26 miles. Be prepaired
to hike 7 miles. The Agio was a handfull, but managable.
The others all had DF's and had to push some at that. It
is like Hightop Road. It is all crushedstone going up the
mountain from the campground and some mud and small
rock on the logging road. It is all double track and
wide enough for a trike if someone wants to venture that, not me.

If you want a really nice day, drive over to Hot Springs
and ride to Paint Creek Campground. Be prepaired for
3 miles of graveled road. Pick a day that is several days
past a rain. That road can get too wet for me. The river
has been known to get out of it's banks and cover the
road, but that is rare. This is a nice 25 mile round trip
ride. One could embelish that by going on up to the top
of the mountain, and that will make it a 40 mile ride
and not bad at all. That would be a fun 12 miles from
the top of the mountain through the park and down
to the French Broad River. Must have good brakes. I was
    happy with the disc brakes.

Let me know what you think.

Vegies, fruit and coffee. No fat in my veins. Need to
get off the coffee, but I'm an addict. My BG was 75
without meds for those who deal with such diabetic
    terms.

I'm going back today and tomorrow. Luv it. Hey,
have learned to put coordinates, waypoints and
geocache in the Triton 2000. Makes life more
interesting and gives an old man some meaning.

**** them black bears. They scare me. Big, mean,
bad. Met Dan that lives in the forrest and he has
them a lot....in the stream beside his cabbin. Nice
guy and right on the trail

Nice ride today. Short of Hot Springs....to busy
taking pictures and geocaching. Seventeen easy
    fun miles all by myself.

This was a round-trip from Paint Creek Camp
Ground down to the French Broad River and
along State route 1305 along the river and
back on Lower Paint Creek Road. No traffic at
    all.

Not even close Jon. We never see his pictures in all
their glory. You can see mine at 5 meg. His go 12
or better. It takes a 5 meg picture 45 seconds to
upload to Picasa. BTW, we may see more of Picasa.
It is much improved and free.

Take another look at the Magellan Triton 2000 in
the pictures. Click on the magnifier then you can
click and drag the picture around. Notice the nice
topo map with road names. The coordinate are
seen at the top with time, strength and numbers
of sattelites and battery strength. The white line
is the road, the green is a geocache and the brown
are my tracks which are within 10' of the the road.
It is as accurate as allowed by the military. The
only dead on GPS's are military or illegal. That's
the information I received from local pro's.

The screen of the GPS is dirty with cotton from
the case I keep it in. It has a screen protector
and I can clean it with soap and water.

Re: My Most Recent Ride II

I have wondered for decades now just how accurate they really are? (miltary)
I was once on a "Boomer" in the middle of the Atlantic when they were called upon to do an excersise that required the acquisition, and deployment of all 16 Polaris missles, on a target in the Gulf of Mexico. And this was to be a combined accuracy and timed excersise.
They fired all 16 Polaris missles in just a couple minutes but were disapointed in accuracy, tho they claimed to have all 16 into a target area the size of a waste paper basket.
Mind you we were several hundred miles east of Norfolk,Virginia and the target was somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, ( a waste paper basket?)
And have you found any web sites that may say how to acquire one of those illegal units......Just outta curiosity :jiggy9:

There are some. Magellan has some professional models.
One is the ProMark 500 that looks like the Triton 2000
dressed up in formal black and priced at 3K.

Take a look at this Magellan that is priced at 9K.

Here is the Promark 500. It has all the features
of the Triton 2000 plus it is a computer for
    email etc. Would like one.

It is called a mobile mapper 6.

Revisited Huricane Gap in the Cherokee National
Forrest on Saturday. Camera date was off 1 day
again. This picture is typical of the road/trail. It
is steep and the gravel is deep and loose in places.
Will not take the Agio again. She was a very bad
girl. OK when going up, but very squirrely coming
down the mountain. I'm getting the Electra crank
forward ready for the next trip. The other problem
was the temperature once the SUN got behind the
mountain. Luckily I had a pair of cotton gloves, but
was ready to get the van warmed up.

Glad to see some of us are getting out!

I joined the ranks today! Poor Loke, I was checking air in the tires and he started whirling like mad until he made himself sick!

Only had time to do about 5 miles after I decided it was warm enough, checked everything, got the trike out the door and ready. The days are REALLY short and getting shorter.

Still, Loke had a blast and it was nice to get out. And there was even about 20 min of sunshine!!:jiggy9:
