Calm down Hon. I know exactly what Buddy is saying and Buddy, I take no offense at your words. :smile9: There is lots of risk, but if I didn't try it, then I would always regret not doing it.

Not worried about bankruptcy. I'm not risking the family farm or anything.....

Well, I had 27 employees on the payroll. Taxes broke me. I worked three jobs for five years to keep the doors open. Dad told me not to do it, but I had to do it my way. By the time it was over, not only did I lose everything, I lost my family. Dad was right there beside me in bankruptcy court. No one lost but me. Plenty of assets to cover liabilities. Taxes can not be bankrupted, so I paid them after I got a job. The problem is that there is not enough time in the day/month/year. You never have a day off and you are the ultimate slave. The owners at Burley turned the company over to the employees. It became an employee owned company etc. I don't envy you. You are competing against "free labor". Hope to be around to see how it goes.

OK, I want to chime in. Some of you know that I am a Veterinarian Business Consultant. I started out as a general business consultant. I have an MBA. I help lots (100s) of start up business succeed. I am not perfect, but i hit more out of the park than I strike out.

Thursday, Bill is coming over to my office to examine the cash flows he has done. This is what I do for a living. My goal is to help him take his engine earing expertise (which I have no doubt he has) and add business expertise so it is profitable.

I want to see this succeed. I think it will be so cool to have and East Tennessee Recumbent Bicycle manufacturer. You know how passionate I am about recumbents, so this is just an extension of that quest. I am going to help him as much as I can. Hope the rest of the group helps as well!!!

Couldn't agree more, but alas with no business experience my 'opinion' doesn't qualify as much. Good you are there to help him through uncharted waters and at least act as a compass for which direction might be right or wrong.

All that said though, and popular or not, Buddy's comments are grounded in reality. In my opinion you can make your own mistakes (i.e. school of hard knocks), or you can learn from others mishaps.(i.e. school of less-hard knocks) :wink9: I had no idea he ran a business and am now curious what it was like for him.(i.e. the good  , the bad:thumbsdown: , and of course...the ugly:rant2: ) As he noted though...

so food for thought indeed. After all, the idiom of Praemonitus Praemunitus (i.e. Forewarned :listen: is Forearmed :anger:) certainly applies. :smile9:

    ...Taxes broke me.

I have a great tax lawyer. I usually pay about 3 to 4% of my gross salary every year. She is great on biz taxes too.

Ok, as I understand it you are going to manufacture a LWB with: a titanium frame, full Shimano Deore XT components and Velocity Thracian wheel sets and you are going to sell it for under $500.00?
My biggest pet peeve on all of the Forums (with the exception of this one) is the constant dirge about the lack of entry (price) level bikes and then they turn around and bad mouth the component set up on the ones that are entry level. Me I bought what I could afford and it is a great little bike. I can upgrade components as I go along, but the frame you buy is the one thing that you can't upgrade. So for my money I want a good frame, as light as possible. Every thing else I can tweak at my leisure.

I agree with you. I've done that more than once. Granted it's more expensive in the long run. After all you're paying aftermarket rather than OEM prices for the components. However it's a lot better to get the best frame and propitery components you can afford up front. Most lower end Shimano componentry works almost as well as the higher end stuff does (at least when its new).

Me - I love eBay - love to haunt the components listings - I wanted old stlye pedals, not clipless - bought a pair of Lyotard platform pedals and clips. They work like a dream. If I want Campy (and who doesn't ?) I can pick it up used for less than the high end Shimano components.
