We return to Tellico River Road, yet again! Check out this link to the Tellico River & Bald River Falls webpage.

A return to a beautiful ride we enjoyed just a few years ago. It's unique, in that it can be up to 36 miles total round trip. In short, it's a slight continuous grade 18 miles up to the TN/NC State Line & then you coast back down to the start! :outtahere: The beauty of it is, ANY time you get tired (3mi, 5mi, 10mi, etc) and want to turn around to go back to the start, you get to COAST back down to them! :spinny:
Click :right: HERE :left: to see a detailed MAP of the ride route.

    NOTE:
A=Cherohala Visitor's Center (1st white dot on the left of your screen)
B=Small Parking Lot at River Road junction w/Cherohala Skyway (middle dot)
C=TN/NC State Line (Last dot, towards the right of your screen)
    We'll meet up at the:
Cherohala Visitor's Center (See Google MAP of Cherohala Visitor's Center location)
    225 Cherohala Skyway
    Tellico Plains, TN 37385
    at 9:00am EDT

Since the Over-Look/Parking Lot at the intersection of Cherohala Skyway (which is Hwy 165) & River Road is pretty small, we may see about getting all the bikes/people shuttled from the Cherohala Visitor's Center up to there, and then try to start the ride around 9:30am.

Note: It's several (~4 to 5) miles from the Visitor's Center up to where Tellico River Road breaks off on your right :goright: so you're welcome to ride up if you want, but the road can be busy at times.

If you can't make it by 9:00, come when you can and just start riding up Tellico River Road. Sooner or later you'll catch some of us. :radar:

The Sept 25, 2011 date for this ride, originated from the LET'S GO RIDE discussion so that will be our primary date we'll be making plans for.

If the weather is just too awful to ride in that weekend :sad9:, then Oct 2, 2011 (the next Sunday) will be the date we'll use for our back-up ride plan.

As stated above, we'll meet-up at the Cherohala Visitor's Center.(see pic below, and/or LINK in Event Post above) Then, depending on how many folks show up in attendance, we may use a few vehicles to shuttle the bikes on up to the small parking lot, on the right there at intersection of Cherohala Skyway (Hwy 165) and River Road where we'll START & FINISH the ride at.

Attached are two screenshots showing the ride we're talking about.

The first screenshot is more of the general area, including Athens, Madisonville, and Tellico Plains with the ride location in the lower righthand corner. The second screenshot is more of a curve-by-curve shot of the ride. Sorry for the poor hi-lighting, but it's a green hilite on a green background.:sad9:

The highway across the top of the screen (in RED) is Hwy 165, the Cherohala Parkway. The dotted Y-E-L-L-O-W line is the TN/NC State border. Roughly, we'll be riding from the GREEN dot to the RED dot and then back down again.

Between the green dot & the red dot is approximately 18mi. You can ride up to the TN/NC Stateline from Tellico, right along the riverbanks and whenever you get tired, just turn around and have a (mostly) downhill route back to the beginning.

Anyway for any out-of-town folks interested in coming along, I hope this answers some questions as to roughly where we're talking about.

So, do we want to plan on having a small :eat2: picnic after the ride again this year? :munch: If so, who's planning on bringing what? :mmm:

And don't forget (unless things have changed) that cellphones don't work in much of this area, so bring along an FRS (Family Radio Service) Radio if you have one to keep in communication with some of the group who's ahead of, or behind you. :wink9:

And remember Channel 2 is where we'll be tuned into.

Well, that wasn't a "no" yet, but it is quite a haul there and back. I've done 66 rides so far this year for just under 2000 pedal miles. They've included the Sunrise Century in west TN, Ride Like Hale Metric Century in Hawkins Co., Horsey Hundred Metric Century & Half Century in KY, some of the local Tour de Plains, and 29 round trips Morristown to Jefferson City. So I've spent a share of $$ on gasoline and overnights. The Tellico Plains ride was a fun day ride last time in part cuz so many were in the group. And the weather was good. And the food was excellent. Anybody remember the guy's name who pulled the trailer with his dog in it? Dog barked all the way up but don't recall much from him on the screamin' downhill coming back.

It was mooseman, who went by William and I think the dog's name was Bailey if I recall correctly. But he SOLD his trike the next year, so I guess he's moved on to persue other passions for the time being.

Anyway, Tellico River Road is a nice ride. Shaded, beautiful and as Dave noted FUN. So if you've never done it before, come on out and join some of the rest of us.

I guess I'll be brown-bagging it, since the participation seems to be down from before. But still, a ride & a picnic among friends is a good time. :wink9:

Dave, just come stay with Willie G and Me. We have plenty of room and you can ride with us on the way down. Plenty of space in his truck too. Saves on fuel and hotel costs.:yes9:
