Well, seems the mornings are fixing to be a bit cooler now, so maybe a break in this hot :yuck: weather is just around the corner??

A favorite FALL ride in the past has been TELLICO.(See this thread for some 2007 pics)

The nice thing about it is, regardless of your fitness level you can turn around at any time and coast all the way back to your car/truck.

It's an 18mi long gradual rise (i.e. no steep hills) in elevation, or 36mi altogether if you ride all the way up to the TN/NC State Line and then coast back down to your vehicle. The route is right along beside the Tellico River, so it's always a bit cooler there, plus you're often shielded from the SUN by all the trees along the route.

See this Event Thread, for some more details about when we organized one back in 2007. If there is interest we can start a NEW Event Thread, but we'll need to poll folks to see when a good time will be for it.

Sundays would be nice if for nothing else to allow Mark and his crew to come on out and experience Tellico. This is a beyond awesome ride with a nice railroad grade up and a thrilling coast back down. Premium riding for trikes. Smooth pavement almost all the way up and down except for one short section by the National Forest campground

Sounds like a nice ride. We have rode Walland road several times so far. I start new job on 22nd, see what weekends I have off and do a ride.

Also it is hard to find a road here that doesn't have a hill in it. Hills are hard to climb on recumbents, you can't stand to get any power. I wasn't a good climber on DF and worse on recumbent.

I haven't yet found a hill in east TN or anywhere else that I can't climb on my Rocket. I don't apologize for stopping on the hills sometimes, but I NEVER get off and push. Just takes developing some different muscles from riding uprights and learning how to spin. As for generating power, if U weigh 180 pounds, you can only push with 180 pounds max on an upright's pedal. If U can leg-press 500 pounds, you could push with 500 pounds on a 'bent's pedal (until you break the crank or blow out a knee). 'bent is a better way to go, hands (or feet) down.

I LOVE this!!!:jiggy9:

Unfortunately if I hit a hill that is too steep for me I don't have a choice but to get off and walk or else my left leg loses all feeling and all muscle control...not good. Also, walking once in a while allows me to stretch my muscles and allow for some blood flow in a different way. Sometimes I get a big kick out of the tingly feeling:biggrin:.

Besides, I am a girl an I am ENTITLED to the option of getting off and walking, it often times get me sympathy from some of the handsome guy riders who so kindly offer their assistance...and who am I to deny them their right to be manly and chivalrous?:laugh:

The above is your opinion/experience... right?
Here's mine (in parenthesis):

This assumes that the muscles are there to develop.
(The station wagon exploded my right femur, the shards shredded the quadriceps.)

This assumes that the structure of one's knee can take the cyclic leg-pressing.
(As a consequence of the aforementioned impact and the subsequent surgeries, the right knee is both weaker than the left and bends at a sub-optimal angle.)

This assumes that the rider weighs 180Lbs or less.
(My weight fluctuates... but it is always less than 180#, as it's much less
stressful for me to walk around when I weigh as little as I possibly can.)

This assumes that the rider can sustain a high rate of 'spin'.
(spinning is aerobic and sometimes anaerobic. I'm pretty accomplished with that skill-set.)

That's a whole lot of assumin' goin' on there, ain't it?!
:wink9:

Here are some applicable (to the O.P.'s post) quotes:

-"If I can bicycle, I bicycle." ~ David Attenborough
-"It never gets easier, you just go faster." ~ Greg LeMond.
"The secret to mountain biking is pretty simple. The slower you go the more likely it is you'll crash." ~Julie Furtado
-"It's not about the bike" ~ Lance Armstrong

-" 'Bents are bikes and bikes are fun." ~ Me.
Good thing too.
My 'bent allows a cripple like me to continue to enjoy bicycling!

We all have things that makes us less-than-perfect cyclists. Chondromalacial patella (knees) are becoming more of a Challenge all the time (decades of tennis & racquetball), as is weight.

Some have more challenges than others; sounds like you have more than your share. I hope you agree that regardless of how/where/when you cycle, 'bent is better.

Please see the POLL above, to pick which date(s) you could attend to ride if you're interested. :jiggy9: It's a multiple-choice POLL, so feel free to pick more than just one weekend. :cool9: We'll see where the majority falls and see about setting something up for then if possible. :wink9:

For those curious about the elevation gain, as Bill said it's a gentle railroad grade up to the TN/NC State Line. You can turn around at almost anytime, and coast back to where you parked your car.

Just one of the beautiful sights along the way, Bald River Falls...

Another thing to consider is WEATHER. What if it rains us out on the 25th? If we plan for the 18th (when at least 4 users could go) and it rains us out, we would use the 25th as a backup date in that case.

Plus, we still seem a little bit shy of having some folks vote, so I'm going to add a can't go choice as well. Last time, we had around a dozen folks show up for this ride, so I want to collect a little more data before choosing a date for it yet.

I plan to be in Bryson City, NC the weekend of September 25th for some canoeing on the Nantahala. I could give up paddling on Sunday for this! This would make a great combination trip!

Thinking about it, several other weekends might work for me as well.

Well since we've got 6 people who can attend on the 25th, as well as an out-of-stater to boot, we'll go with the 25th as a primary date for the ride.

I'm closing this thread and opening an event, where we can discuss specifics to determine if we want to picnic again afterward, etc.

See Tellico River Road 2011: 09-25-2011 for more discussion about this ride.
