    Regarding “Driver hits woman in S.F., then Cruise driverless car runs her over; photo shows victim trapped” (San Francisco, SFChronicle.com, Oct. 2): How many accidents and deaths will it take before autonomous vehicles are regulated? With all this hype about artificial intelligence, we are assured they can do little wrong.

    But time and again in unfamiliar situations computers fail, and we have emergency vehicles blocked and people injured. I ride a recumbent trike with blinking lights and a flag. Will the computer know what to do around me?

    Regarding “The Oakland NAACP has stumbled its way to irrelevance” (Justin Phillips, SFChronicle.com, Sept. 28): Justin Phillips calling out the Oakland NAACP for not playing the progressive light-on-crime game is misguided and not facing the reality of the situation.

    For decades, the Democratic-led city and Black leaders have wanted less policing, fewer arrests, and nowadays under Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price, fewer prosecutions. This has come back to haunt them, as the city has tumbled into a crime wave abyss.

    The Oakland NAACP has a clear Vision that the city needs stronger policing, as rampant crime has become a way of life. Carjackings, shootings, robberies, shoplifting, smash and grabs, flash mobs and sideshows have the community living in fear. Members of the NAACP are hearing the despair from citizens and know all too well the situation has reached a breaking point.

    The NAACP, and citizens throughout Oakland are calling on the mayor, Price and the police to take back the city.

    Phillips thinks they have turned their backs on the traditional progressive defund the police mantra, and he may be right, they have. Because that experiment has clearly failed.
