'Spokes Fighting Strokes' adaptive cycling clinic, test ride Stevens Point News

STEVENS POINT — Do you have poor balance? Would you like to be outside exercising, having fun, but you cannot ride a regular bike anymore? Would you like to improve your health conditions, recover from effects of a stroke, Parkinson’s or other health issues or disabilities? Riding a recumbent trike might be for you.

Hostel Shoppe and Midstate Independent Living Choices of Stevens Point are hosting two free clinics put on by Dan Zimmerman of “Spokes Fighting Strokes” July 19 and July 21. Dan suffered a stroke in 2005 as the result of Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT). Though recovery was difficult and took a long time, he is now able to do many things that were previously considered unattainable. His mission is to reach every stroke survivor and show them that recovery is possible. Through his “Spokes Adaptive Cycling” clinics, he helps stroke survivors gain independence, ability, hope, and freedom. The goal is to increase awareness about stroke and HHT (Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia), the cause of his stroke and to make adaptive cycling available to the stroke community. While he and his organization focus on overcoming the hurdles of suffering a stroke, his empowering message and the products he highlights can help a wide range of people, such as those with traumatic brain injuries, Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, balance issues, limb loss or paralysis, or those on the Autism spectrum.

Currently Dan is on a cross country tour with a fleet of demo trikes and adaptive equipment allowing people to demo his equipment, answer questions and help them regain their freedom.

The Stevens Point events are scheduled for Tuesday, July 19, from 1 to 4 p.m. and Thursday, July 21, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Both events will be held at the Hostel Shoppe, 3201 John Joanis Drive, Stevens Point. Snacks and refreshments will be provided by Hostel Shoppe.
