Popular Perth bike scheme returns for summer season with new electric offering Daily Record

Live Active Leisure’s award-winning All Ability Bike scheme has reopened for the summer season.

And there are three new additions to their offer, which supports people of all abilities to get out and enjoy the benefits of cycling.

Two electric trikes and one electric-assisted wheelchair bike have been funded by the eBike Grant Fund, which is funded by Transport Scotland and delivered by Energy Saving Trust.

It provides the first new electric bikes to be owned by the Bell’s Sports Centre-based fleet.

Since its inception in 2016, All Ability Bikes has received funding from various partners including Perth and Kinross Council Common Good Fund, The Gannochy Trust, Cycling Scotland and The Baily Thomas Charitable Fund.

The fleet now boasts 15 bikes in total including a side-by-side model which allows cyclists and their carer to ride together, and a semi-recumbent model which is an excellent option for people who struggle to sit upright for various reasons.

“Outwith the three new bikes we also have a wheelchair bike, three trikes, a hand cycle, a child’s trike, five solo bikes and another side-by-side.

“People can try a different bike each week in order to find the one best suited to their needs. Once they find one that works for them, they can continue to use it until they’re more confident and comfortable trying a different model.”

Tim Anderson, group head of transport, Energy Saving Trust, commented: “It is fantastic to hear that the eBike Grant Fund has provided Bell’s Sports Centre with two electric trikes and one electric assisted wheelchair for the local community to enjoy over the summer months and beyond.

“The grant fund is intended to open opportunities for all to enjoy the benefits of cycling; these trikes and the wheelchair will be a great addition to the All Ability bike scheme.”

The bikes are available for anyone to hire, and individuals without carers who require assistance on a two-person bike can book the support of a qualified instructor.

Sessions run on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10am to 4pm and on selected Friday mornings...
