    Lawrence rallies to get Ladybird diner's beloved doughnut baker back on three wheels

    Lawrence, KS - One of Ladybird Diner’s doughnut bakers is known for more than just his pastries.

    People around Lawrence grew accustomed to seeing Joseph “Jay” Hutton on his recumbent tricycle with colorful flags.

    But ever since it was stolen over the weekend, the community's rallying behind him to replace it.

    Ladybird Diner’s owner, Meghan Heriford says Hutton’s known for his wealth of knowledge—and the trike.

    "I was devastated,” she said. “That bike is Jay's—well, it's how he gets around for one thing, but it's also sort of his trademark. Everybody knows Jay as the recumbent bike guy."

    Michael Combest, owner of High Hill Cycles, has been friends with Hutton for almost 30 years. He says they bonded over bikes. Well…

    “That and beer,” Combest said.

    Jay Hutton, who prefers to call himself the diner’s “Toroidal Gluten Specialist” (which also means donut baker), has held several titles, including bike mechanic and map designer, besides holding other skills and specialties.

    "He's just one of the best people that I know,” Combest said. “He happens to ride this really cool trike until some monster stole it, so we're gonna fix that."

    Hutton says the trike was stolen sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. He had it locked to a tree at the side of his apartment with a sturdy cable.

    "I've had it for probably about 15 or 16 years,” Hutton said. “It was nostalgic to me for other reasons, it was first picked up by a dear friend of mine who passed ...
