The best truing stand is...the one you have.
IDK how often you plan to use it, but in general, you need one when you're building a new wheel and have a trike. Otherwise, makeshift solution with a fork of your regular bike is good enough.
I bought one when I was rebuilding my front wheels and since that, it is just collecting dust. Sadly, trike is so huge collection of custon solutions, that I can't rely on regular bikeshops.
Here are some pics, it was cheap (relatively), available and robust. Yet I had to make my own pins to align my hubs...

Thanks for replying! I check the True on our wheels at the start of every season. (The state flower should be a pothole.) Haven't built a wheel, yet, and I know what you mean about local bike shops. There isn't a dedicated bike shop within 10 miles of where I live. There was good one just about 10 miles away, but it became part of a chain, and the quality of service immediately degraded. Fortunately, I took an advanced course in bike maintenance about fifteen years ago, and do all the service on both our bikes. I have a Park Tool TS-2.2P, but I've never been happy with it. Supposedly came from the factory properly adjusted, and I've spent more time trying to get it properly adjusted than I have truing wheels. :beatdeadhorse:I think Park Tool quality has gone down. So I'm looking for something I don't have to re-engineer to make it work properly. "The only tool you can afford is the best tool you can find." I'm looking for something better. Found a German made one at $2k…:eek9:
