I'm planning to buy a trike (new or used) and like the ride/feel of ICE Adventure trikes but bike shops, within a reasonable drive if my house, only work on Bosch motors, not Shimano motors.
Is it possible to put a Bosch motor on a ICE Adventure trike (used would be ok)?

Perhaps I asked a taboo question. I hear that ICE only allows Shimano motors to go on new ICE trikes. As far as aftermarket additions - I've seen Bafang motors on ICE trikes. So, I just wonder if Bosch motors can be installed on ICE trikes - by a bike shop. Shimano motors are good but few if anyone near my house says they works on them. Many thanks to anyone who can give insight on this.

As far as I know, Bosch motors are not available as upgrade kits, even to bike shops. Every Bosch I have ever seen was mounted in a frame made for it, not a conventional BB "add-in".
The mid drive aftermarket options I commonly see are the Bafang, Tongsheng and CYC.

I've been riding an ICE Sprint X Tour with the Steps E8000 system, factory installed, of course. 5,500 miles in just over a year, and not a hint of anything going wrong with the motor. I'm not sure what can go wrong with the motor that would require repair, but I'll concede that theoretically something could malfunction.

I assume that since your local shops won't work on Shimano, you're possibly considering buying direct from ICE. If that's True, send an email to their customer service and ask them about your "what if" concerns. If you're looking at buying used, I still don't know what motor issues could crop up (unless it's been submerged, somehow). I love my trike and have no issues with it in general or with the electric system in particular. I did have a couple of connectivity problems over the past year, due to vibration, apparently. In each case, a call to my dealer (3 hours drive away) provided me the information about the cause and the solution, which I was able to use to fix the issue each time. They were easy fixes, done in a few minutes, with no repeat malfunction since then.

I have a Catrike 559 with a Bosch e-assist. The Bosch's only come factory installed, no aftermarket. Both Bentup Cycles and Zach Kaplan Cycles have had folding trikes from HP Velotechnik, ICE, and other folding trikes with broken hinges which were caused by the torque from 1000 watt Bafang motors. So if you get a folding trike you may want to stay away from the 1000 watt Bafang.

If you want a Bosch you may want to check out Catrike and TerraTrike since they both use Bosch motors. I really like my Catrike 559 eCat. The Bosch on it is really smooth and quiet and gives me all the assist I need. I get 75 miles on a charge, but use eco mode most of the time. I only use the higher modes for hills and strong headwinds.

I just finished installing a 750W Bafang on my ICE Adventure HD, and I will confirm you do not need 1000. In fact, I'm going to change the programming to less power, 500-600W max. it will give me longer range time and be easier on the controller.
