We need to act on the science on climate change: LETTERS TO THE EDITOR The Canberra Times

    Go recumbent
I was only four years old in Chile when I pedalled a little children's car my parents briefly hired for me; I've never been happier with a toy.

Seventy years later in Canberra my small grandchildren make nothing of seeing me still pedalling a toy pedal-car of sorts, a recumbent Tricycle.

But grownups I encounter on the cycle paths, once they realise my age, are often quick with friendly advice: "how about installing a motor on it?"

My usual reply that I already have two very efficient ones (pointing to my legs) often leaves them unconvinced.

So, for those intrigued by this odd form of transport, a brief explanation: if, regardless of your age, you are tired of a normal bicycle's seat discomfort and precarious balance; if you want to find yourself looking for excuses to go pedalling every day ("any shopping to be done?...") rather than asking "do I really need to go?" then get a recumbent tricycle.

The same applies if if you want to help the environment while enjoying Canberra's excellent, unpolluted cycleway network; if you want to surprise your GP with your fitness and vitality; and if you want to see people reacting with surprised delight as you pedal and are that happy child again.

I ride a dual-purpose road and rough terrain "adventure recumbent trike".
