    KILLARNEY, Co. Kerry, Ireland — Ipswich native Chris Slavin began an arduous 1,100-mile journey yesterday.

    She started her trip around the island of Ireland on her Handcycle. A wheelchair user, Slavin has to use a recumbent bicycle and power ahead with her arms and shoulders — muscles that don’t have the same oomph as those in your legs.

    But she took off from Killarney yesterday to begin the trip to fundraise for her non-profit Project Possible, which will help find ways for wheelchair users to enjoy the great outdoors.

    “So, yesterday a pretty amazing thing happened,” Slavin reported on Facebook.

    “I began my ride yesterday from Killarney. Along the route I saw a coach bus with all of the passengers standing outside. Not only were they cheering, but they were using my name, Slavin said.
