At 91 Years Old, Mansfield Cyclist Still Going Strong Hartford Courant

Mansfield, CT - For his 90th birthday last year, Saul Nesselroth and a group of his friends celebrated by getting ice cream.

They didn’t drive to the ice cream store. They biked – 90 kilometers, or 55 miles.

He biked in Norway. He has biked in China and Bali and India. Mumbai was the most interesting.

“When TCC was formed in 2001, we were two of the charter members,” said John Hankins of Mansfield. “It was a racing club at the time and Saul was 75 when he joined the racing club. He was out there racing in these criterium races.”

Hankins does not know any other 90-year-old cyclists.

“It’s kind of unheard of,” he said. “When you get over the age of 80, your balance goes to hell. The idea that you could still ride a bike, over the age of 90 — I Challenge you to find somebody else doing that. And it’s not like he’s riding a quarter mile, he’s riding 25 miles. It’s crazy.

“I haven’t seen any sign of him slowing down. Saul doesn’t think that way.”

A few years ago, he bought a recumbent three-wheeler. He fitted it with panniers so he can take it to the grocery store.

“I figured when I’d get old, a trike would be good,” he said. “If I want to go out in a lawn chair, it’s a wonderful relaxing kind of ride. It’s a blast for downhills – it goes like a freight train.”

Well ... guess he's got me beat by a few months .... still another 3-4 weeks to go before I hit the 91-mark in September - lol ! Also by a few miles ... my longest ride in past year has been 22 miles, but did manage around 32 miles overall this past week.

:congrats: for being as mobile as you are! I was amazed that Saul (above) was still on a DF bike and apparently has pretty good balance. :heelclick:
