I keep sliding forward in the seat

    Hi All,

I am having a minor problem. I keep sliding forward in the seat and I end up putting pressure on the small of my back and not the my seat. I have to keep adjusting my position in the seat to sit on my seat. I'm not sure why I'm sliding forward since you would think that pedaling would keep me pushed back in the seat.

Other then putting Velcro on the two seats, the trikes and mine, I'm currently at a loss as to what is the problem and how to fix it.

I'm riding an ICE Adventure with a mesh seat.

    Any ideas?

    Gary

My first thoughts are to recline your seat a bit more, and/or try laying a rubberized piece of mat in your seat.

I'm referring to the kind you often find in the bottom of household cabinets, that's an open grid-type material. I know it comes in black, white, grey and tan and is v-e-r-y thin.(0.039" or just 1mm) I just looked and what I have here at the house is Non-Adhesive Easy Liner by DUCK Products, which I assume came from Kmart or Lowes. :idunno:

Another possibility might be to adjust your seat pan/bottom. If you can raise, or tilt the front of it UP any that might make things somewhat better. :update: From what I could see of your trike seat, it looks like the angle is fixed/permanent between the seat bottom and the seat back.(i.e. all-one-piece)

Lastly, what material are your cycling shorts/pants made of? I'm recalling when we started out on our tandem and I wore lycra type shorts that were very slick. My captain's seat was about as straight up as it could be, because I didn't have much faith in my balance yet. In time, as my balance got better I laid my captain's seat back further and I've never had any more problems with sliding down in the seat.

Btw, Kudos for spinning instead of mashing...as your knees will thank you for such!

I tended to keep sliding forward on the hard shell seat, I kept adjusting the crank further forward till it seemed to balance out and I didnt feel like I was sliding forward any more - However this may have led into the issues of Recumbent Butte and more tingly foot - so I cant advise authoritatively on this matter. :embarrassed9:

Part of my reason for moving Crank Forward was the Pain on top of knee - which did seem to go away after reaching the balance point :)

    Hi,

According to the info in this video from ICE I'm over extended.

After watching it yesterday I went out to the trike (not wearing cycling shoes) and sat on the seat making sure I was sitting as far back in the seat as instructed in the video. Following the instructions around the 4 minute mark the heal of the shoe was about a half inch away from the pedal.

    Now I need to either

    • adjust the boom (best option)
    • use the small trail seat I have behind me (quick fix)

    Regards,
    Gary

I just watched the video and have to give ICE credit, their trikes are VERY adjustable. :s11:

When Art Hagood fitted me to my Hi-Racer, he did so very similarly to the video above. However, he said with my leg fully extended I needed about 1" of free air gap between my heel and the pedal, so that's how I learned to adjust my seat. To date, it's always worked for me and I can tell when the distance is too-short, because I feel cramped on the bike.

Anyway, do what feels best and right for you, but the 1/2" you mentioned doesn't seem out of line to me. :wink9:

    Hi,

Went out for an 18± mile ride today. Before leaving the first thing I did was to see how close my heal in my cycling shoes came to the pedal. It was a bit closer then the shoes I had on yesterday. I did not want to take the time to adjust the boom so I grabbed the trail seat placed it on the seat against the back and again measured the distance. Heal hit the pedal. I also made sure that the foam pad in the seat was as far forward as it could go.

I made other adjustments while I was out:

    • After about 0.378 miles I was not liking the feeling of the trail seat behind my back and I felt like I was crammed into the seat , so I stopped (had to stop for traffic) and I ran the pad between the back of the seat and the seat straps. That felt so much better, but heal did not make as firm of contact with the pedal as when the pad was between me and the seat and I still slide forward.
    • After about 7 miles I loosen the tension on 3 of the seat straps that run under the seat causing a deeper bucket to sit in.
    • At about the 16 mile mark I leaned the seat back one notch. This caused the front of the seat to raise.

During the last 2± miles I don't remember having to slide back into the seat. May have, but just don't remember doing so.

I'm not saying that I don't have to make an adjustment to the boom, but for now I'm going to test ride my current adjustments for awhile. With the changes in the seat, after I got home I took the trail seat pad out and I was able to have the heal of my shoe touch the pedal. Next few rides will see how things work.

I noticed that the front side of my thighs seemed to get a workout compared to before, but I’m not sure if it was the changes since today is VERY windy, speeds at 20 mph gusting to 45 mph and it seemed like all I was doing was riding into the wind.

    Regards,
    Gary

    95%

    Hi All,

I have solved most, say 95%, maybe more, of the problem with sliding forward in the seat. A couple days ago while out riding I again loosen the three seat straps on the bottom creating a deeper bucket

Today while riding I noticed that when I pushed back into the seat I only moved about ½ inch max compared to the 1.5 to 2 inches before I started making the adjustments. Furthermore the frequency was much less.

Basically I made adjustments to the seat straps (twice) and leaned the seat back one notch. Have not had to make adjustments to the boom.

Thank you for the help and suggestions.

    Regards,
    Gary

And a lot has to do with the handlebars. Mark Powers had to rebuild the handlebars on my new Corsa because I am very long legged (X Seam 46) but short waisted. So he had to move the handlebars forward to clear my knees then extend the handlebars so my hands could reach it. The headset looks odd but works perfect for me.

Raining today, but picture of new bent will be forthcoming. I call it "Precious". And it weights NOTHING!
