First off let me say I LOVE MY TRIKE. :notworthy: I have no plans of not riding it. But there are a couple of downsides to a trike.

First, it weights more. The extra wheel and frame forces it to be a heavier bent. I would like to lose some weight on my bent (I need to also! :yes9: )

Second, it is cumbersome to travel with. It is low, but very wide and long. So it forces me to use a van or SUV to transport it. I have adapted a bike rack to fit it, but prefer transporting the trike inside to keep it clean and dry.

So in looking for an ADDITIONAL bent, I decided to go the two wheel route. I scratched the LWB bents for the same reason as my trike, they are hard to transport (too long). That left SWB two wheel bents.

With that in mind, I switched to companies. I don't want to buy a bent and the company go out of business on me. (Look at Burley, Bike E, etc.) I wanted a proven design and a solid company from which I could get parts from in the future if I need it. The only company that fits that criteria is RANS. Several of our members have Rans bents and I have never heard anything bad said about them. Plus no one is selling theirs, so they must like them. :yes9:

In looking at the Rans line up, comfort is very important to me. That means a more "upright" position. (Sorry AD, the Force Five is out because of this.:hissyfit9: )
That settled on two models... Drum roll please... The Rocket and V-Rex. Dave who is our leading mileage rider this year has a Rocket while Mike and Don have V-Rex's. I like the idea of a bigger back wheel (though you have to carry two different tubes with you.) And that mammoth big gear on the Rocket scares me. Looks like a buzz saw in a lumber mill!

So that said, I have settled on a V-Rex. Now the problem is finding a used one with an XL frame since I have such a long inseam.

How did others decide to buy their bents? What were your criteria. AD pipe in! :jiggy9:

Interesting. THIS is what makes a forum so nice, to learn from others, and why I asked the question.[If/when we do an FAQ on "Buying your first 'bent, this is a good point to mention.] I hadn't really considered the pros/cons of SWB vs. LWB in the transporting-it catagory. VERY good thing to consider though.

Yes, sad news about Burley indeed.

Ahhhh, but comfort lies in the back of the beholder. :wink9: I've been on mine all-day and it fits me like a glove. And lying back futher (on my F5) means no (numb) Recumbent Butt ever! :tongue9: Still I understand, different strokes for different folks. So whatever works.

Yep, both are fine bikes alright!

ha, ha, Again beauty lies in the eye of the beholder I guess, as I really LIKE  the look of the front sprocket on the Rocket.

Well my Force 5 came about after riding the Vision Saber. S-w-e-e-t bike, but I didn't care for buying a brand that had gone out of business either. As such, I just told Art I was interested in a Force 5 and he finally got some in...took several months though back during the initial production phase.

Don't know of one off the top of my head. Have you checked the for sale forums at Bent rider on-line, recumbents.com, the Hostel Shoppe, People Movers, and IHPVA?

As for a first 'bent AD, when I first started riding 'bents the V-Rex was way too spirited (read that 'twitchy') for me. I needed a much more mild mannered ride until I was comfortable enough to relax into the seat. By the beginning of my second season of riding I was ready though Art had to practically beat me over the head with it to get me to re-try a V-Rex (after all I hated the bike the year before). Now, 7 years later I'm still riding it.

By the way, a 10 message limit in the inbox? Is that just for personal replys or does any forum post count towards that limit?

time in the saddle and transport.

1: the time i am on my bike each day while touring or traveling.
On a typical travel day i do 150 miles (I eat and drink in the saddle, no breaks im on my way to someplace)
on a typical tour day i do 100 miles ( a break at lunch and an early knock off to set camp, normally a rain fly over the bike and i sleep in the seat)

2: the few times the trike moves under another mode of power.

1:my butt feels fine after 150 miles and i am not sore and beat up the next day.
LWB,SWB, low/high had me much more tired than my trike.

2:i just strap my trike down to the top of the car (almost any car) the three points of contact are rubber and you have places to lash to. works great and with a little care it wont scratch the paint
