    Hi All,

Is it possible to use a bar end shifter to shift the IGH portion of a SRAM Dual Drive?

Is there some other device that I might use other then replacing the current twist shifter for the rear derailleur.

If my questions are answered on the forum in another tread please point me to it.

    Thanks,

    Gary

I'm not aware of any indexed front bar-end shifters, as the front derailleur barcons (the other term for bar-end shifters, if you haven't heard it before) are, as far as I have ever seen, always strictly friction shifters. The gearing inside the hub on a Dual Drive or the old Sachs 3x7 and similar IGH systems needs indexed shifters to work, so I think you're stuck with grip shifters or indexed thumb shifters (which I'm not sure how you'd mount on most 'bents) for the internal gearing.

I think you'll find that only the right-hand shifter (the one for the 9-speed cassette) is indexed. The left-hand, for the front derailleur (what would be the IGH internal speeds) is friction.

    Additional questions

    Hi All,

I know that this thread is old and dusty, but I have additional questions. I think that I know the answers, but I just want to make sure.

I have been able to get my hands on a pair of circa 1990 Suntour friction bar end shifters. These were mine to begin with. They had been on a bike that I had given to my son. He has been rebuilding the bike for 10 or so years and does not plan to use them (standard friction shifters are still on the down tube), I really don't think he will ever finish the project.

Both shifters are the same and have about 110 degrees of travel.

    Now on to the questions.

    • Anyone know any reasons why these shifters won't work with the Dual Drive? I know that finding the neutral location is important and that most likely the full range of the shifters movement will not be used.
    • Is it better to pull back on the shifter or push forward on the shifter to shift from low to high? I realize that this is a personal preference thing, but just want some thoughts on the matter.

    Thanks,
    Gary

While I can't answer your last inquiries, I am curious about what you may have done & how it worked/didn't-work.

I recently tried to swap over from barcons to STI shifters on my Reynolds T-Bone, but it didn't work out...yet, anyway. :wink9: I've not given up. I'm still hunting for what all I think I need, but it's still a work in progress.(...mostly in my head now :laugh9:)

Have not done anything yet. Since I have VERY little income, I have to do things slowly. Still talking about it to the wife.

Just hard to spend the money at this time. I may get a 24 or 22 teeth chain ring and replace the 26. that will help with the 12 - 13 percent grades we have to climb on a regular basis.

I understand completely! :yes9: Sounds like you're on the right track though.

Oh, and don't overlook eBay for affordable components. :spinny:
