Augusta again

Was able to do several new things today.

First time to do all three (count 'em: THREE) Augusta , GA bike paths in the same day:
The North Augusta Greenway
The New Bertram Greenway
The Augusta Canal Trail.

First time doing the Augusta Canal Trail.
I wasn't even aware of this one until yesterday. Mostly a tow-path in between the Savannah river and the Augusta Canal. Very flat, but mostly packed dirt and dirt/crushed stone in some places. Was near the limit of my Rocket's rider ability in a few spots, but a very nice ride. The river elevation changes very fast just north of Augusta. A huge lock was built to help stem the routine floods that the city endured. This weekend marked the last full week that embankment renovations were made and the trail looks really good. Tons of people and bikes along this 7.5mile path northwest out of downtown. Out-and-back since it's sandwiched between the waters.

First time soloed most of a ride in Augusta
Wife shuttled me to near downtown and then went shopping rest of the day. On my own. Washington Road is a major north-south thoroughfare thru Augusta; similar to Kingston Pike in Knoxville. I had to get back to my daughter's apartment on my own. I was determined to stay off Wash Rd., but it was a 10 mile trip back. I had bought a street map earlier in the day and it turned out to be the best $5 spent in a long while. I had to take 24 separate streets to get back to the apt. That doesn't count several aborted ones that didn't lead where I wanted to go. But an adventure nonetheless.

Weather was cloudless all day and around 58 deg. Near perfect cycling conditons. Total for the day: 42.5 miles. Back home sometime late tomorrow (Sunday).
