Question Helmet suitable for 'bent w/ neck pad

Hi,

Does anybody have a recommendation for a helmet suitable for a 'bent with a neck pad? My 'bent is Performer mid-rider which has a neck pad that supports the top of my neck just below the base of my skull. The standard roadie helmets come down too far and are not comfortable with a neck pad.

Thanks for the help,

Freddy

Re: Helmet suitable for 'bent w/ neck pad

Hi Freddy,

I have a neck rest that I use on my Carbent and used on my ti-Aero before. For me, I have to get it at just the right height that it comes in under the helmets outer shell but its okay to me if it rests against the softer plastic of the rear adjustment. I ride with a Limar helmet but I have also used a Giro without any problems.

The difference might also be in the design of the headrest. Mine is only about 2" in diameter, just a 1: piece of pvc pipe attached to a piece of aluminum that attaches it to the seat. The PVC pipe is then covered with a piece of foam pipe insulation.

If you feel you need the neck rest and that one doesn't work, try altering that one or seee if you can't get another one. You can see mine here.

Re: Helmet suitable for 'bent w/ neck pad

Giro makes a line of helmets good for skateboarding but are also approved for bike use. They are 'hardshell' but add little weight.

My wife and I both use them and they do not have the little aero tail that is on most roadie helmets. There have been numerous studies which indicate the little 'tail' actually causes neck injuries in accidents so a round back helmet is more desirable anyway.

I use a red metal flake Giro Makai helmet. It comes in a variety of colors. I know that they still make these because Doc at our local shop stocks them in a variety of colors. The perfect recumbent helmet I think.
