I mentioned last week I had my first flat of the year. Two years ago when I had 8 flat tires in 2 months (due to a bad tire), I got very good at changing tubes. And wouldn't you know it is always the BACK tire that needs fixing. So you get to mess with taking it off and putting it back on the derailleur. [That is why I pack disposable medical gloves to keep my hands clean.]

Well this year I bought a new tire tool and my flat gave me the chance to try it. It is the Crank Brothers Speedier Tire Lever. I got it at REI!

This tool (in conjunction with a regular set of tire levers) makes taking off and putting back on the tire a breeze! Now I usually don't have trouble taking the tire partially off. Once you get a tire level under, you can pull it over the rim and then lock it in a spoke. Then you start working the tire out with the other tire lever.

With the Crank Brothers you do the same thing. I used a tire lever to get it started, but then used the "remove" end to get the tire bead out of the rim. With the tire 1/2 way out, you can get the tube out and either fix or replace it.

Once you change or fix your tube another trick I used is a travel size bottle of baby powder. You sprinkle it in your hand (you don't care because you are wearing rubber medical gloves) then you spread it all over the tube. This makes the tube very slippery so when you put it back in the tire and give it a pump or two to slightly inflate and get positioned, it never gets bunched up or overlapped.

Now at this juncture, you turn your Crank Brothers Speedier Tire Lever around to the "install' side. This is really slick. You put the hook on this side over the rim and start moving it around the rim. I pushed the tire over the rim and back in place very quickly. Slick!!!

Here is a side view of the tool. [Left side is "install" right side is "remove".]

It is very light weight. The tool protects your hand because you put it through the handle. This gives you great gripping and leverage.

Right now it costs $8.00 at REI and I think well worth it.

I have the earlier version of this tool, which telescopes out and attaches to the skewer to spin around the wheel when used.

I can say it's the quickest and cleanest way to change out a tube, but nice to know it's been updated and looks to be a little sturdier now.

Plus, that's an excellent suggestion Jon about the travel size baby powder shaker! :cool9:
