    Tellico River Road Returns!
Ride Leader - Don Sullivan A.D. Wade

A return to a beautiful ride immensely enjoyed by all last year. Up to 36 miles round trip.

    Meet up at:
    Cherohala Visitor's Center
    225 Cherohala Skyway
    Tellico Plains, TN 37385
    at 9:00am EDT

Since the Over-Look/Parking Lot at the intersection of Cherohala Skyway (which is Hwy 165) & River Road is pretty small, we'll see about getting all the bikes/people shuttled from the Visitor's Center up to there, and then try to start the ride around 9:30am.

Note: It's only about 2mi from the Visitor's Center up to where River Road breaks off on your :right: right so you're welcome to ride up if you want, but the road can be busy at times.

If you can't make it by 9:00, come when you can and just start riding up River Road. Sooner or later you'll catch a bunch of us. :jiggy9:

Are we meeting-up at the same place this year there in Tellico, at the:

    Cherohala Visitor's Center
    225 Cherohala Skyway
    Tellico Plains, TN 37385
    (pic below)

Then driving on up to a parking lot, on the right there at intersection of Cherohala Skyway (Hwy 165) and River Road?

Also, are we planning on a Picnic again afterwards? :Eat: If so, we probably need to start discussing who's bringing what...besides their appetite's!?

We are planning on a picnic, with or without others.

Rob is bringing his two boys and his oldest boy's girlfriend.

Meeting at the visitor center and then shuttling up to the parking lot on the river sounds fine with me.

I wanted to give the group a "head up". Don Sullivan is out of town for a week on a bike and camping trip so he will NOT be ride leader. His wife Judi let me know after I emailed Don to see if he was still planning the trip.

So you will have to organize this trip among yourselves, which is what it looks like you are already doing. Anyone want to take the lead on this ride? :yay: I will be at my cabin this weekend and will not attend.

Well I'm planning on being there and have ridden it before, so unless someone else wants to jump in and volunteer, I'll be happy to organize it. :biggrin9:

Last year we met at the Visitor's Center at 9:00am, then carpooled on up to the parking lot on the right there at where River Road breaks off of Hwy165.(i.e. the Cherohala Parkway) So does that sound alright for this year? Earlier?, Later? Speak on up if 9:00am doesn't work well for ya. :jiggy9:

Attached are two screenshots showing the ride we're talking about.

The first screenshot is more of the general area, including Athens, Madisonville, and Tellico Plains with the ride location in the lower righthand corner. The second screenshot is more of a curve-by-curve shot of the ride. Sorry for the poor hi-lighting, but it's a green hilite on a green background.:sad9:

The highway across the top of the screen (in RED) is Hwy 165, the Cherohala Parkway. The dotted YELLOW line is the TN/NC State border. Roughly, we'll be riding from the GREEN dot to the RED dot and then back down again.

Between the green dot & the red dot is approximately 18mi. You can ride up to the TN/NC Stateline from Tellico, right along the riverbanks and whenever you get tired, just turn around and have a (mostly) downhill route back to the beginning.

Anyway for any out-of-town folks interesetd in coming along, I hope this answers some questions as to roughly where we're talking about.

Sally, I think you'd do fine. The 17mi trek up to the TN/NC State Line is just one, long, gradual climb. There are no 'steep' hills that I recall along the route, and the only flat (i.e. level) section is right around Bald River Falls. When I came back down last year, that was about the only area (for about a mile) that one would have had to pedal to keep rolling. Then again, once I left the State Line I pedaled all-the-way-back down to the cars having a blast, at speed! :jiggy9:

The really nice thing is, whenever you get tired or hot you just pullover to the side and you're overlooking the river. Heck, step off and cool your feet for a bit. :wink9: Anyway if/when you feel worn out, just turn your bike around and coast back down to your car. :yes9:

    Bill & Company,
You all realize the ride is on Saturday :o_O9: (09-15-2007) like it was last year, right? Just wanted to make sure.

We know. Rob is no longer a preacher. He is now a general contractor based out of Maryville. So we can skip church once in a while.......

Or is it just going to be an eat-what-ya-bring picnic? :huh2: Either works for me, just don't want to wait 'til the last minute :yikes: and have to scramble for stuff to bring. :auto:

Well, unless we find place with a picnic table or use a truck tailgate...having a place to sit everything for a picnic will be tough. If we use a tailgate...then we should plan on a "group" eating event:Eat: if not then everyone needs to bring their own. Perhaps we should put it to a vote???

Mickey S. is headed for Oregon and won't make the Tellico ride.
Al, Buddy, and I are all doubtful as a result of various family issues.

If I do make it, sounds like 0930h at the parking area beyond the Visitors Center will be the time. As Mickey did last year, I plan to park at the Visitors Center and ride up to the parking area. A good way to get a few more miles and add to the return's downhill coast.

I don't mean to be a stick in the mud but I've been soooooooo busy at work the last couple of weeks and I had to bake a LOT of stuff for last weekend's VA picnic I'm worn out. I'll do good to get sandwich stuff together because I'll be going in early tomorrow morning and Friday morning and the last thing I want to do is shop on my lunch time, and if I'm this tired by Friday I'll do good to ride Saturday 'which I'm going to do' but I just can't think about getting food together for a pot luck. :no9: So for now my vote is everyone just bring their own food.
