Regretfully selling a beautifully crafted vintage Penninger Trike that was E-Converted several years ago. Charles Penninger of Penninger Machine Corporation in Chicago built these unusual trikes on the side in his large industrial machining plant. They were only on the market a few years in the 2001-2002 time frame and expensive at $2700 before Ebike/Pedal Assist became a thing. The high quality materials and construction are quite apparent and admittedly unsustainable from a low volume US maker at the time. Very few were made.

When COVID changed things my wife and I found escape on Front Range paved bike trails. We started with two pedal assist bikes, we're in our 60s and not athletes. My wife was not comfortable on two wheels and I stumbled across the Penninger and as a retired engineer I was smitten by the witty design features. It's an unusual trike for being a semi upright seat without the laid-down-high-crank setup that is too radical for folks our age. Now that we've moved to our place in Bayfield the idea of accessing paved bike trails has proven unworkable for us.

July of 2020 I installed a new 48V 20Ah lithium battery pack normally made for an electric wheelchair. The original twin 8spd Shimanos (do the math, pick a gear) and the jackshaft drivetrain are fully intact. It's a pedal assist, meant to flatten hills and extend range for folks like ourselves who still want to enjoy a long ride with a workout that isn't painful. It has taken us 50+ miles cruising at ~15mph without faltering and I imagine it will go much further without recharging.

Rather then go through all the mechanical specs here, let me note it's all high quality stuff that bike geeks will appreciate. If interested, come check it out. As you can see from the pics we are not on pavement so a test ride will be gravel limited.

$2400, less then we have in it.
