Picked up my first recumbent, Catrike Expedition, about a 2014. The seat is killing me! There is a horizontal band that cuts across the middle of my back. I now have a permanent sore there. I tried duct taping a thick diaper on the seat, then tried unbuckling the strap. No relief.

Has Catrike changed the design of their seat? Is there a better, aftermarket seat?

On another note, what brands and models do folks recommend for more performance? With my two-wheelers I averaged 13 mph on solo rides, 14.5 with groups. On the Expedition I'm averaging 10 mph on solos.

:mmm: I'm not aware of any aftermarket seats for the Expedition. The BicycleMan had this to say about the seat: "The lumbar curve on the Expedition is a nice addition I really like it. The Catrike seat cover has many buckles which allow you to in effect adjust the amount of lumbar curve but tightening and loosening them." So my guess is, it's the 'lumbar curve' of the seat frame that doesn't fit you so well. As mentioned, about all you can do is tighten/loosen the seat straps for a better fit.

As for bike vs. trike speed, that sounds about right. I know myself (here in the hills of TN) I have to work to maintain a 12mph average on a bike, while if I just lay back and enjoy the ride on a trike I often average about 10mph. I guess the biggest thing to look at is the rotating mass and investigate a lighter wheelset and/or tires...which isn't cheap unless you can find a used set. :embarrassed9:

:exercise:Have a 2018 Expedition and yes the seat is hard so I ordered from Utah Trike a Ventisit cushion. Well what a difference that made , it was worth the cost. Also used same cushion when I had a KMX, seat is really bad.

Thanks for the tip. I see that there are several models. I'll call Utah Trike tomorrow and get their recommendation. I see that they have 2 thicknesses, 2 & 3 mm, as well as 2 widths, 35 & 40 cm. The last overlaps the frame a bit. Which model do you have? Thanks
