Thanxx for the heads-up, as the news surprised me. I always thought the greatest danger on the Natchez Trace would be getting run-over by tourists who are too busy sight-seeing to watch the road as they should.

Dogs are a bicyclist worst enemy. I've crashed hitting dogs and I've
been bitten twice. No more of that. Bear Spray is very effective. I get
mine from the local gun shop and have learned how to use it. I'll say
    more about that later.

I still employ a 0.43" paintball gun, loaded with rubber bullets. :anger: Typically a couple of shots will deter a canine and the mag holds nine shots.

But we have used the Bear Spray before and it was VERY effective on a pack of yapper-dogs that would come out into the road when we were on our tandem in the past. Once we hit a few of them with it (to keep them out of our wheels), for the next year they would bark at our arrival and run away from the road, back towards their home. :laugh9:

Just a Heads-Up to all: Might want to consider storing any Bear Spray inside your house, in another container.(i.e. Large plastic baggy, bucket, etc.) If they do ever happen to spontaneously leak, they can leave quite a stain and cause a lot of nose/throat/eye irritation. Also, store it as far as possible away from any Central Heat/Air return.

Big thread on another forum about dogs and pepper spray. One person is trying to say that dogs don't attack, bite, get into the road, chase or Roam where he lives (Brazil). The dogs must be better behaved there.

No, we've only ever used the COUNTER ASSAULT brand and never had any problems. But I had heard of others having issues with other brands and what a mess a leaking canister can cause. :hissyfit9:

I did have an old boss once who kept some regular pepper spray in the console of his wife's car and took it in for service one day. It had been in the hot car for months and had leaked out some onto the canister. He didn't realize it and ruffled through the console looking for something and happened to pick up the canister. A few minutes later, they almost called 911 because he didn't know/understand what was going on. Luckily the intense heat on his forehead (which he had just wiped with his palm a few mins earlier) quickly reminded him of what he had recently picked up. :yikes:

    Yeah I know

The one mistake the old boy didn't make was one day he found a real
pretty young woman and talked her into staying with him.

    :embarrassed9:Thanks Buddy, you're a charmer.:wink9:

Crying (if you call it that), gagging, coughing and breaking out of our house that evening the pepper spray exploded is what we did. We didn't die, but whew! That was a nasty experience. Definitely something to deter dogs with.:yes9:

If you are planning to use normal pepper spray on any "bad" dog or a pack of feral dogs. Do not count on it. I think i posted a cpl years ago about getting attacked on an Indian reservation by a pack of feral dogs. Big Lab Rott mix seemed to be the ring leader. I emptied a can point blank in his face before he chomped down on my hand can and all. Thank God he came up on my left and i was able to acquire a weapon. Got bit several times on legs by smaller dogs and once on elbow before a CHiPy showed up and gave a warning shot with his 12ga. Biggin was blowing bubbles out the side of his chest where i kept stabbing him so the officer dispatched him. So if you gonna ride the Trace get the real "BEAR" spray. And ax Buddy if you can borrow his Judge.

Think twice about carrying/using bear spray vs. dog spray. It is a far, far more potent chemical that can really cause some damage. We were preparing for a trip out to Glacier National Park where grizzlies are common. I went to Bass Pro to buy some bear spray. Was told, correctly, that it could not be carried on the plane in any baggage, checked or carryon. In fact you gotta have a permit to even mail it. We had to buy some at the park's ranger station at inflated price, carry it, and return it (unused thankfully) to the ranger station where they bought it back at a reduced price.

:embarrassed9: If I read this sometime before, I don't recall doing so. Anyway, congrats on being able to defend :smack: yourself in the midst of a pack of feral dogs. Most impressive.

And Gene, whenever you relate the story in the future I'd rename Biggin to his real, last known name..."Bubbles." :wink9:
