View Full Version : How I spent my economic stimulus check: new wheels
I've been a bicycling fool for many years, but the recent few years have been unkind; carpal tunnel surgery, two rotator cuff repairs, and an arthritic back have forced me to hang up the old two-wheeler. Thanks to the government's largess, however, I'll soon be back on the road on my new ride, a deSantis recumbent bicycle from Actionbent. (http://www.actionbent.com/)
A recumbent looks like a head-on collision between a conventional bike and a recliner. The rider sits in a relaxed position on a chair-like seat. The pedals are out in front of him, rather than beneath, and the handlebars can either be mounted below the seat or above, much like the handlebars in the old one-speed Schwinns many of us rode as children.
The recumbent has an advantage in a headwind, since the rider is in a more streamlined position. It also has some downside; less visible to traffic, more challenging to ride in a straight line, and slower to accelerate from a stop. Nonetheless, for me, it's a grand compromise that should allow me to get on the road again. Thanks, Congress!

It would take a bragging dam yankee to make a statement like that.
If you are so rich, why did you buy a used V-Rex. Here I am a poor
southern raised farm boy, and I managed to dig and scrape and come
up with a brand new Lightning Phantom.
If you boys and girls haven't looked at the new Phantom....look.

I also have a Lightning P-38 on the way to my front door by FedEX.
BTW, a dam yankee is much worse than a regular yankee. He comes
and stays.

Oh come on Buddy, there is nothing wrong with having money and still being cost concious.haha If had lots of money that doesn't mean I got to go out and spend it just because I can. I am always looking for good deals. Heck, I could have bought a bent, but I didn't want to shell out the money for something used...I made mine myself.haha Besides, aren't you are the one who has a whole stable of bents, seems to me as though you got too much cash and don't know what to do with it other than buy bents. Mary has it good, a good old fashioned sugar daddy.hahahaha;)

If you read the book "Millionaire next Door" you will see the average millionaire make $160,000 a year. The key is to live far below your means.
Now I'm not saying I am a Millionaire, but I do try to live below my means and stretch my money as far as it will go. I learned this from Don. I am trying to teach my son who just graduated from college the same lesson. He just bought a used truck!!! :)
I will tell you the next bent I get (an Edge bent) will be NEW and worth it!!! :)

I'll agree with you there. Although I keep trying to convince myself that I "need" a new one but it is sometimes difficult when it comes to putting my old one out to pasture.I have mixed feelings.

Why you ol' rascal.....another new bike?? You must be carrying the Lighning flag for East Tennessee. Don't see many of them around. The P-38 they say climbs like a billy goat. I may have to take back everything I said about lightning..... I ain't even seen your new Phantom yet, now there's another one I gotta see. When we gonna ride???
